I'm on the hunt to watch all the films surrounding James Cameron's The Abyss, the only film that wasn't a flop for this concept of a creature deep within the ocean.
DeepStar Six has moments of cleverness, the scene with Richardson is a ripper. I didn't care for the character motivations and some of their decisions are just odd.
Cunningham was an inspired choice for this film, but this was not a horror film and he feels out of his league here.
The sea monster is a dud and lacks any menace. The end scene is exactly like Leviathan so I don't know which film entered production first, but there is a fair call for plagarism, I'm not investigating, the films are quite bad regardless.

Deep deep risingCunningham show, when the blood flows it's a gnarly affair. I've been waiting for DeepStar Six to hit Blu-ray for some time now. As the world awaits The Abyss to finally someday maybe possibly who knows?
DeepStar Six fills a big gap. Watching it through today, the film is one of those happy accidents where the idea all of these studio imitations play so similar they're practically identical.
There are beats between Leviathan and DeepStar Six that are practically page-for-page the same. Likewise, there are moments in Lords of the Deep that absolutely ripped off both of those movies while desperately trying to make its creature as benevolent as The Abyss and still offer some kind of horror element.
Once the big monster gets into the show, DeepStar quickly becomes Alien meets Friday the 13th with this massive creature hiding in very small spaces but somehow gets the jump on everyone!
Imitation or not, DeepStar Six is a fun one. Maybe not the greatest of the bunch, but I dig it. You can see the cast work their asses off trying to sell this movie.
Nancy Everhard is really giving it her all as the obligatory final girl. Nia Peeples gets the arduous task of being the brainy-but-sexy warning alarm and exposition directory when Marius Weyers' Van Gelder makes a risky decision.
Elya Baskin is fun as his short-lived Burciaga. Matt McCoy does what he does and slings off the jokes with ease… until he gets into that big dive suit.
Then you have a class of actor unto his own, Miguel Ferrer as Snyder who brings his signature jackass intensity while enjoying the best death in the film.
It's an underwater monster show, grab a snorkel and dive in! DeepStar Six gets the Blu-ray love it's long deserved in the U.

Not having seen this in a few years, I was really impressed with the details. I was also really impressed with the details in production design, you can see which sets just didn't have a budget and which ones did.
Colors are on point allowing for excellent primary pop. Blues and Reds get a lot of play given the aquatic nature and the amount of blood and guts in this show.

DeepStar Six is not the best film that Sean S. Cunningham has directed, however it works well enough to a fun, mindless ride if you can forget the fact that it rips off The Abyss and Alien.
Don't expect anything great with this one. However the film isn't as bad as what the reviews have said and it is a bit underrated.
I've always found Cunningham's work after Friday the 13th to be average, and DeepStar Six is most certainly that. This is not a memorable film like the classic Slasher film.
Enjoyable with all its flaws, this is a film that like Leviathan is overlooked due to the fact that it's nothing original. Having said that, it's not that bad, in fact it's good for what it is, and in the end it's a film not to take too seriously.
Having said that, go into this one expecting a cheesy, tongue in cheek good time and just have a mindless, entertaining evening of watching an obscured cult gem of late 80's horror cinema.

It's all centered around a crew of workers stationed on the ocean floor during the construction of a nuclear launch pad when they suddenly disturb an undiscovered pre-historic creature that then turns its anger towards them.
The creature only starts to really get nasty at the one hour mark with a gruesome kill, its only kill really as the rest of the crew tend to get killed off due accidental circumstances, mostly due to the resident screw-up played by Miguel Ferrer.
There's the inevitable flooding scenes that crank up the tension and the entertaining squabbles between the crew members provide some funny moments.
A decent effort overall, takes a while to get going though. Jan 13, Imagine Alien, set underwater, with a 10th the budget and a not so talented director.
