Top positive review. Reviewed in the United States on September 2, I feel as strongly as the most ecstatic reviewers here that this is a fine adventure film.

But at the same time I have to qualify that by noting that this is a classic adventure film and that many viewers are disappointed in it online.

I think decades of Indiana Jones for which this film was a kind of spiritual prototype not to mention every other adventure, Sci-Fi and Young Adult Fiction film have trained audiences to expect the most spectacular and impossible events, bigger than life, aided by computer generated effects.

In King Solomon's Mines the thrills and events are merely life-size, which on screen from the perspective of today, looks pretty small. But remember, it only takes one lion or even an angry dog to totally ruin your day.

This film was its own spectacle when it first came out in , unfortunately just before the advent of CinemaScope which is why it isn't even shown on television that often.

It did have every other new element that the studios were jumping on to get people away from those pesky new televisions that were decimating the box office.

It was in color. It was shot on location in Africa. All the nature and animal footage was shot for this film and became stock footage for other films for the next two decades.

Great respect was shown to period detail. Actual Africans were hired to play Africans including the first tie the Watusi tribe ever allowed films to be made of them.

This includes some authentic chanting and dances which I am happy to say are included in Amazon's streamed version of the film.

Top actors were hired for the principal cast including an up and coming Stuart Grainger and already established Deborah Kerr.

Grainger was a replacement for Errol Flynn who said no when he heard he would have to stay on location in a tent but he was a great fit. The plot, of a woman and her brother looking for her husband who is missing after a trip to find a treasure in Africa is adequately exploredand I'm sure gone into in detail in other reviews here.

The dangers from a charging rhino, a stampeding mass of savanna animals, a spider, a leopard, the desertion of the group by bearers and the appearance of a hostile tribe, were enough to kill anyone in when the film is set, and to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

But this is just where the problems come in. Younger viewers and even those not so young are going to say "Ho-hum" to all of this because they've seen such exaggerated adventures on giant screens today.

Even the love interest is underplayed in retrospect and at the end of the film after a climactic battle, everyone just quietly walks away.

It's nothing like the way films are made today, which would have required a smash-bang ending, but it's worthwhile all the same.

The version followed the book the best, and had the best inside the volcano sequence. The Patrick Swayze version had the best fight scene.

This version was overall superior. It was actually filmed in Africa when it was still wild. The acting was generally superior to the other versions.

Generally, you actually got the feeling of the adventure. On the down side, the diamond mine was geologically totally without credibility surprise!

About half of the wildlife scenes were pure hokum. You should watch it for the cultural snapshot it affords, as Africa is not that way anymore.

This classic portrays the Native populations as they really existed in the savannahs and mountains of remote regions.

In addition, actual wildlife in the real habitats were instructive about the adventure - and dangers - any expedition faced in that time and period.

Of course those legends are not proved. Nevertheless there is the sense of adventure and spectacle about untamed Africa and African tribes in this movie.

When an English woman Deborah Kerr comes to Allan Quartermain Stewart Granger , an African professional hunter PH , to charter a safari into uncharted territory to search for her missing husband, Quartermain at first refuses, but is eventually convinced to go everyone has their price.

What she has is a map, which supposedly shows the location of King Solomon's diamond mines. Filmed entirely on location in Africa, their safari Swahili for "great journey" does eventually find what they were looking for, but with some twists along the way.

Highly recommended for any collector of classic African adventure stories. Rider Haggard's classic novel of them all!!!!!

I would almost have to say this is the gold standard by which all other "Allan Quartermain", "King Solomon's Mines" movies be compared to.

I own several other version's of this story but this is the best of them all!!! Rider Haggard fans will want.

So if you are looking for the best color movie portraying H. Rider Haggard's classic novel look no further than this movie!! This is a version of the HR Haggard novel, with a female character added after the manner of movies made from books with entirely male characters.

It's a spectacular adventure story with romance, because while they fight with wild animals and cannibals, they fall in love.

Will they find the lost husband and finish the nice connection? The film follows an excellent hunter Granger who is payed to go on a safari to find the lost husband of Deborah Kerr and Richard Carlson.

He reluctantly agrees. Along the way they run into different perils. Including many tribes that want the group dead. The film is very exciting. And you feel for the characters when they come into contact with danger.

I wish more action films could make you do that. The performances are the reason behind this. It's too bad that the actors and actresses in the film weren't nominated for Oscars.

I doubt they deserved to win, but they deserved to be up. The script is also very good. It strays away from the book just a little bit.

But I have no problem with that because the film, by itself, is very good. The cinematography and editing are flawless.

Stewart Granger stars as Alan Quartermain, the veteran safari guide. Deborah Kerr plays Elizabeth Curtis, a prim and emotionally-tortured English woman looking for her lost husband.

Richard Carlson stars as her brother, John Goode. The three head into the interior of Africa in pursuit of Mr. Curtis who was seeking the lost King Solomon's Mines.

There is wonderful cinematography which was Oscar-nominated and great drama. This is an old-fashioned adventure drama that depends on solid acting.

It is NOT a faithful dramatization of the I with there were more starts to give. The writing, acting and photography are superb. The cast is most impressive, especially Granger and Kerr, who play their relationship is a very subtle way at first, but the most impressive part of the movie is the animal photography.

It is unfortunate that an elephant was shot, but the entire scene is most impressive. The country, as portrayed, is beautiful.

It is NOT a faithful dramatization of the H. Rider Haggard book, but goes off in a totally different direction with a love story.

Nevertheless, it is a great movie. A film classic of its kind despite the slapdash script. Despite the ever-so-lovely but clearly miscast Deborah Kerr fainting every 10 minutes.
