De film berust op veel toevalligheden wat de geloofwaardigheid in het gedrang brengt. Het eerste gedeelte is nog redelijk, maar nadien had ik het wel gehad.
Ik kon er mijn aandacht nog moeilijk bijhouden. Een behoorlijke voldoende dus alles in acht genomen wat mij betreft. De acteerprestaties in deze film zijn goed.
Maar de ganse film wist mij niet te overtuigen, vond hem saai en vooral langdradig Een boeiend verhaal wordt rond Ripley geweven, iemand met een niet bepaald benijdenswaardig leven, zeg maar gerust miserabel en betekenisloos.
Enige vorm van sympathie voor Tom is niet onredelijk die door dom toeval een taak krijgt van scheepsmagnaat Greenleaf.
Mooi word zijn aankomst gebracht in het betoverende Italie, het rustige en weldadige leven maar toch ook het mysterie Ripley zelf die er soms rare gewoontes op na houd.
Daarnaast wordt het mysterie mooi gestalte gehouden door het trage tempo en vooral het tot totstandkoming van bepaalde dingen en gebeurtenissen.
Is het zo zorgvuldig uitgedacht en gepland of overkomt het Ripley ook maar? Damon wordt zorgvuldig geregisseerd en speelt goed, Law is perfect voor zijn rol als playboy, Hoffman op uitmuntende wijze stuitend zoals zo vaak en wat is Blanchett om op te vreten zeg.
Na de kennismaking met het heerlijke leven en hunkering naar acceptatie, zelfs twijfelachtig qua geaardheid, valt het grote voorbeeld toch tegen en ontstaat het grote masterplan om vooral het leventje door te kunnen zetten.
Iets wat uitmond in het leven van een pathologische leugenaar, en tevens iets dat altijd met risico gepaard gaat, vooral als je als een ander voordoet.
Echter, wat aan deze film schort is het volgende; het tempo en toch gebrek aan spanning. Twee dingen waarvan het tempo naar het einde steeds meer begint op te spelen, en juist de spanning eindelijk een beetje begint te komen na de moord op Freddy.
Alleen daarom is de film al de moeite waard te gaan kijken.

De enige die nog enigszins weet te overtuigen is Marge een rol van Gwyneth Paltrow. Verder gaat het op enig moment wel wat tegenstaan, dat telkens net niet ontdekt worden van Ripley.
Weinig geloofwaardig. De film duurt ook wel wat lang, gelet op hetgeen het verhaal te bieden heeft. Het wordt op enig moment vooral meer van hetzelfde en ietwat langdradig.
Hele goeie remake van Plein Soleil, maar alsnog vind ik Plein Soleil toch beter vind dit toch wel een hele andere film maar wel erg goed!
Helaas heeft Matt Damon niet de charmes van Alain Delon maar daar kan bijna niemand aan tippen. Tweede kijkpoging voor deze The talented mr.
Ripley en wederom niet helemaal overtuigd. Net als bij The English patient vind ik bij de films van Anthony Minghella geen connectie die me overtuigt van een wow-effect.
Ook bij Matt Damon heb ik datzelfde gevoel. Hoewel zijn prestatie hier behoorlijk was, blijf ik hem een overschat acteur vinden. In The departed was hij voor zijn doen bovengemiddeld ok, maar zijn topprestatie moet toch Good Will Hunting zijn.

They argue on a small boat, and Dickie says he has had enough of Ripley and is going to marry Marge. Ripley insinuates that Dickie is rejecting him because he is afraid of the feelings they have developed for each other.
They struggle, and Ripley kills Dickie with an oar. He takes Dickie's belongings and scuttles the boat. Realizing that people mistake him for Dickie, Ripley decides to assume his identity.
He forges a letter to Marge, convincing her that Dickie has left her to live in Rome. He creates the illusion that Dickie is still alive by checking into one hotel as Dickie and another as himself, creating an exchange of communications between the two.
Through forgery, he is able to draw on Dickie's allowance, which allows him to live lavishly. He runs into Meredith, who still knows him as Dickie, in the Gucci shop in Rome.
His ruse is threatened when Marge arrives in Rome and Tom runs into her at the opera he is attending with Meredith and her family. He rushes Meredith out on a pretext then breaks it off with her to prevent himself from being exposed.
Freddie shows up at Ripley's apartment looking for Dickie. When the landlady addresses Ripley as Dickie, Freddie realizes the fraud.
Ripley bludgeons him to death and disposes of the body. Ripley is forced to create stories to avoid the police and Marge, who are looking for Dickie.
Realizing that the police suspect Dickie of murdering Freddie, Ripley forges a suicide note, with "Dickie" claiming responsibility for Freddie's death.
Ripley then travels to Venice, where he re encounters Marge's friend, Peter Smith-Kingsley first meeting him at the Roman opera house , and they become very close.
Peter acts as a translator for a meeting with the police and Ripley panics when he hears that the Roman police are coming because Inspector Roverini knew him as Dickie.
He is relieved to see that it is a different officer who did not know him as Dickie. Dickie's father travels to Italy to meet with the police, bringing along a private detective, Alvin MacCarron.
Ripley prepares to kill Marge when she discovers Dickie's rings in his possession and begins to deduce what has been going on, but Peter interrupts them.
Greenleaf dismisses Marge's suspicions, and MacCarron reveals to Ripley that the police are convinced that Dickie, who had a history of violence, murdered Freddie before killing himself.
