Liquid vs Secret Game 1 - Bo3 - Lower Bracket ESL ONE Germany 2020 - DOTA 2 LIVEHis fifth period was the mids Superpowers and Hunger Dogs but that period makes me sad. The stories are big, the dialogue that odd Kirby was of speaking and was sparse at that.
Bruce Berry did the honor of inking him; I always loved his Kamandi work with Jack also. The production values of the book are great, I love the non-shiny paper stock unlike the DC Archives which lets you read without a glare and recalls the comic book experience.
I will be honest, when I picked up a stack of comics the war ones were always at the bottom. But reprinted here in one fell swoop I have gained a new appreciation for this undiscovered Kirby gem.
This volume collects 11 issues written, edited, and drawn by Jack Kirby from 74 to Those who have seen Kirby's artwork and read his narratives in Marvel Comics, as well as in The New Gods and Kamandi, will not be disappointed.
Although I am a staunch Kanigher and Joe Kubert fan when it comes to war comics, Kirby makes a smooth transition from the superhero story to the war genre with ease, lending to it his unique narrative and artistic style.
His narrative is a mix of action, humor, drama, and irony; and his artwork is minimalist. The Losers are not alone in these stories.
Kirby gives them interesting company for each episode: a missing pianist in Kill Me with Wagner Nov. Each of these stories have surprising conclusions for the protagonists.
Just take the examples of Ivan, who ends facing his own firing squad in an ironic twist of fate; or Miles-A-Minute Jones' discovery that he has just raced over a mined field while competing with his German rival.
Kirby's storytelling lives up to Kanigher's dramatic voice, but is quite different in his creation of characters. These are more complex and are a product of Kirby's imagination.
The difference with Kanigher may lie in that the Losers are not alone in their war-caused anxieities. His stories also show readers an exquisite mix of the supernatural The Partisans , the autobiographical - I can't help suspecting that Kirby got himself in his own story through Rodney Rumpkin, a science fiction fan who uses his imagination to battle the enemy The Devastator v.
Big Max , and the psychological The Major's Dreams. Kirby also continues the tradition of The Losers by sending them to many countries affected by the war and which country wasn't affected by WWII?
Hello Death! This volume also includes the covers for each issue, most them drawn by Jack, and three covers done by Joe Kubert.
The tome has a nice colorful Jacket as well as a beautifully drawn hard cover with a picture from the cover for A Small Place in Hell January This picture is so appropriate because it reflect what the Losers were all about.
It also has a brief introduction by Neil Gaiman, a childhood reminiscence from when he encountered Jack Kirby's Losers.
In sum, if you are a fan of war comic books, or a Kirby fan, this book is for you. One person found this helpful. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.
Although people like myself are not overly enamoured with the war comic, the presence of Jack Kirby as both writer and artist on 'The Losers' is enough to demand - and perhaps even to command - our attention.
Although Kirby's eyes and his sensibility were both probably damaged by the time he came to work on this book , there is still enough going on within its pages to demonstrate what the comic book medium is and is for; what it can do, what can be done with it and how beautifully, in Jack's case, it can be done.
Given what I have written above, I would say that, stylistically, these are some of the purest comic books that have ever been made.
In order for this judgement to be made, it is essential to know that Kirby is performing four principal functions on these books.
He is functioning as artist, storyteller, writer and editor. Although writing and drawing 'The Losers' might not have been what Kirby wanted to be doing at this stage of his career, against this you have to weigh the fact that the Second World War - in which he had played an active part - always weighed quite heavily upon both his conscious and subconscious minds.
The war was never that far away from what he wrote and drew onto the comic book page. So a war comic - a comic book about the war - was likely to draw something worthwhile from him.
And 'The Losers' happened to be the title which gained the benefit. This is not to disparage the comic itself - the characters are engaging and their 'Special Operations' status gives the writer and artist plenty of scope to send them hither and yon on a wide variety of missions.
In terms of visual storytelling, I would say that Kirby's work on 'The Losers' serves as an interesting counterpoint to his earlier work on 'Sgt.
Fury and his Howling Commandos', whilst at the same time sharing certain stylistic features in common with it. Fury' without Stan Lee. Kirby's take is more real; in his hands the war is a more genuinely bloody, bruising and crushing experience than the pages of 'Sgt.
Fury' would generally allow it to be. This is another point of interest for Kirby's work on 'The Losers'.
The weariness of war is much more to the fore, in the pages of 'The Losers', than it ever was in 'Sgt. In one famous story by Kirby contained in this volume 'The Losers' are given three-days' leave, only to find themselves dropped off at the wrong town in order to enjoy it.
The town they find themselves in is occupied by the Nazis. So, with their leave passes in their back pockets, 'The Losers' find themselves engaged upon a sometimes hand-to-hand firefight for their very lives, trapped within the streets and rooms of a small town in France.
Kirby drew heavily upon his own wartime experience for this particular story, which is called "A Small Place In Hell", and the results are written and drawn all over the comic book's pages.
It has come to be regarded as a genuine classic. But really, all of these stories have a great deal to recommend them. Although perhaps not Kirby's best executed work of the book, one of my personal favourites happens to be 'The Partisans' because, essentially, it is a ghost story.
And the combination of the military with the supernatural, like the combination of the western with the supernatural, can sometimes produce interesting results.
It is not the only example of the 'romance comic' to be found dotted across his later work. Which brings me to my final point: Some of Kirby's best work for DC was done in the years The wounded giant was trying to find his feet again.
They mark something of a partial renaissence in his work as a whole. Jack was finding a way, or ways, to bounce back from the perceived debacle of the Fourth World.
Perhaps he and we rediscovered, during those years, that he could still lay it on Report abuse. It's the King!
Some great story art and dialogue from Jack Kirby in this nice package. A nice introduction from Neil Gaiman, and some sterling work from the King on characters he didn't create, but he somehow manages to create a supporting cast of characters, far more original and interesting than the lead characters.
Some great inking from Mike Royer and the only thing that lets the book down is the inking from D Bruce Berry and reprinting off some of the original covers by Joe Kubert who phoned these ones in!
Some nice pencil pages thrown in as a bonus. For fans of the greatest comic book artist of all time, this is a must, even if you don't enjoy war comics, you'll enjoy this book, the King knew how to tell a story, something sadly lacking in the majority not all of todays appalling comics.
A great read and great art. Arrived on time and very well packed. This collection reprints the famous Jack Kirbys work on The Losers.
Drawn in typical Kirby style this edition reprints it on coarse newsprint which is a tad dissapointng A good enjoyable read and the colours are bright enough.

The blockbuster features a sobbing little boy having his arm ripped off by a monstrous clown. It features children being terrified, tortured and killed and yet the most attention has focussed on the notorious sex scene from the original novel.
In the book, Beverly is just 14 but has sex with all the other, even younger, members of the Losers Club. The scene was cut from the new movie but Stephen King has spoken out to defend and explain the controversial moment.
He believes people are "more sensitive now" about such issues. The author also explained exactly why he included the sex scene and how it is vital to the way the two storylines in the novel are linked.
