This is so that when under siege, should foes enter the castle the staircase can easily be defended as the majority of people fought with their right hand so the easier and more powerful attacks with the sword comes from the defender further up the stairs , these ones goes anti clockwise giving the advantage to the attacker.
The CGI in this is terrible. Also the shaky-cam is on overload throughout the film.
